Following some reports on what is the importance of iPhones are at users by age, CIRP released its latest study this morning. The report reveals which iPhone models are the most popular in the United States for the first quarter of 2023 and how well the iPhone 14 line is selling.
The CIRP has published its First quarter US survey asking consumers which new iPhone they picked. Notably, the January to March period is only the second full quarter that included the availability of Apple iPhone 14 range. As CIRP points out, “These numbers are so important to understanding Apple’s performance that we review them quarterly.”
Most popular iPhones for the first quarter of 2023
- THE iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max were the most purchased models, with 22% and 24% share of the total, respectively. The iPhone 14 was the third most popular with 19% of the total.
- The iPhone 14 Pro’s share increased from 15% in Q4 2022 to 22% in Q1, becoming more popular than the more affordable iPhone 14.
- While the iPhone 14 Pro Max remained the top-selling of all models, its share declined by 4%, from 28% in Q4 2022 to 24% in Q1.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max accounted for 46% of total US iPhone purchases in the US survey. Add the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, and the latest iPhone models accounted for 75% of the total.
The CIRP points out that the three-quarters share for the iPhone 14 range is an increase from the 71% the iPhone 13 line garnered a year ago. Impressively, this means that Apple’s more expensive models are grabbing a bigger share of sales than before.
In conclusion, CIRP notes that sales of Apple’s high-end models strongly translate into higher Apple profit margins. And there seems to be a trend that “most customers are moving from earlier iPhones to higher-end models, while Apple is capturing Android’s switchers and early buyers with older, lower-cost models.”
