Zero Cow Factory, a biotech company producing animal-free protein and dairy products in India using bio-engineered microbes and precision fermentation, raised $4 million in a round of table. The round was co-led by Green Frontier Capital, GVFL and pi Ventures, with participation from Pascual Innoventures, the investment arm of leading Spanish dairy group Calidad Pascual. With this funding, Zero Cow Factory will be able to accelerate its R&D efforts, increase its production capacity and obtain regulatory approvals to enter the market.

Zero Cow Factory is heavily focused on producing animal-free casein, which is the most complex protein and has not been commercialized by any company in the world. It aims to reinvent the meaning of the traditional dairy and food industry by producing India’s first animal-free milk protein and dairy products using bio-engineered microbes and precision fermentation, according to an official statement.
“Livestock being the number one agricultural source of greenhouse gases, precision fermentation startups have the potential to disrupt the dairy industry globally. If the world (and India) is to meet its net targets zero, there needs to be a fairly quick pivot to sustainable solutions like precision fermentation and in that regard, Zero Cow Factory, is working diligently to develop its own proprietary solution based on A2 casein, a weakness that the ingredients at have not yet been able to successfully resolve,” said Sandiip Bhammer, co-manager and founder of Green Frontier Capital.
