The playground sensation of the mid-90s is back in action: POGs make a comeback, this time pairing physical milk caps and slammers with NFT discs and an online game.
POGs entered for the first time Web3 about a year ago, the first launch on the Solana blockchain with a handful of collections, including digital collectibles featuring Solana’s Okay Bears Project.
But this week, POGs will make the leap to Ethereum with a new mint NFT that matches the start of an online version of the classic POG-slamming gaming experience.
“Now that we’re going to Ethereum, it feels like we’re stepping into the big leagues,” said POGs NFT founder Kyler Frisbee. Decryptciting increased trading volume and liquidity compared to the Solana NFT space.
POGs NFT, a subsidiary of the World POG Federation, operated the original protocol NFT Origin Story Platform to develop a personalized drop market. April 6the company will launch 3,800 Ethereum NFTs spanning a mix of POGs and slammers with unique artwork for each, priced at 0.049 ETH (about $90 at the time of this writing).
NFTs can be used in a slate of upcoming Ethereum-based video games slated to launch this summer. The first POG play-to-earn game, called Stack and Slam, will debut on Solana this week. Frisbee said it mimics the classic slammer throwing playground experience, relying on a combination of timing, skill and luck for players to succeed.
Some of the NFTs will feature artwork from popular NFT projects like the Bored Ape Yacht Club And Lunar birds. Bored Ape owners may use or license their own artwork for commercial products, while Moonbirds open source artwork is free to anyone to market. Other POGs NFTs are based on projects like Neo Tokyo And Long live Vandal.
Beyond this week’s mint, Frisbee and his team plan to release physical Project Web3-themed POG packs in May via a tokenized platform, allowing NFT POG owners to access the market for purchase limited edition NFT-based POGs.
From there, Frisbee has a number of ideas on how to further embrace Web3 with POGs. He envisions a potential physical game that uses NFC chips in the POGs themselves, then automatically transfers token ownership from the loser’s wallet to the winner’s.
The goal of POG NFTs, he said, is to provide digital collectibles that power video games, but also to partner with the physical experience of POGs.
He teased plans to bring back physical POGs in a big way, with NFT expansion and celebrity partners intended to “bring the right buzz for the return of official distribution of these POGs around the world.”
