So far, we haven’t heard much about the Galaxy S24but a new leak points to a major display upgrade coming next year: the Ultra model will apparently come with displays with a 144Hz refresh rate.
It comes from SamLover (opens in a new tab) (via Sam-Mobile (opens in a new tab)), which isn’t a source we’ve heard much advice from in the past, so adjust your anticipation levels accordingly. It might not happen, but it’s also an upgrade that makes sense for Samsung and its high-end phone.
Right now all three Galaxy S23 the handsets feature screens with a 120Hz refresh rate, so that would be a significant step up in terms of the numbers – but not one that would be massively noticeable when using the devices.
Let’s talk about specs
A smartphone screen’s refresh rate simply affects how fast it refreshes: the higher the number, the smoother all your animations, videos, page scrolls, and games will look. It is a specification that distinguishes high-end handsets from budget phones.
We also have other specs planned from the same source, some of which we’ve heard before: the Galaxy S24 phones will apparently be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which matches with a previous rumor.
The S24 Ultra will apparently stick with the same 200MP primary camera sensor as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultrabut with “a few improvements” added, while satellite connectivity (like on the iPhone 14) is also rumored to be on the cards.
Analysis: how will Ultra be Ultra?
The Ultra model of Samsung Galaxy S phones is still the most expensive and feature-rich – and especially since the Note line ended and Samsung handed the stylus over to the Galaxy S Ultra smartphone instead.
Take a look at the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra launched in February, it has a bigger screen than the other two phones, it can be equipped with more RAM and more internal storage, and it has a superior rear camera setup.
We’ll have to wait and see how Ultra the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is, but it looks like that 144Hz refresh rate will be exclusive to the most expensive phone in the lineup. This will likely be the biggest phone in the series again.
This strategy of offering a high-end phone at a high price is of course the one that Apple is also following: indeed, it could actually double the bet, if the rumors surrounding the introduction of a iPhone 15 Ultra Later this year.
