And it seems that this popularity does not stop abroad either.

Like other “eco-hotel” startups that have sprung up in recent years, Australia-based Unyoked doesn’t operate giant hotels with hundreds of rooms and thousands of guests.

Instead, it has found its niche with tiny off-grid houses on wheels surrounded by nature.

When you’re in an Unyoked cabin – all two hours from nearby towns – you’re unlikely to see or hear other people.

And that promise of seclusion has driven travelers to book its cabins since the company began six years ago.

Within the first 48 hours of Unyoked’s launch in March 2017, all of its cabins were booked out months in advance, Cameron Grant – who founded the company with his twin Chris – told Insider.

The hotel provider currently has almost 100 units spread across Australia and New Zealand, including a handful in the UK.

And over the past six years, those cabins have maintained an occupancy rate of about 73%, Grant said.

Following this strong demand and a fundraising of over $19 million, the hotel company will now begin to expand across Europe…

Grant believes the company has had this level of success because it “created a new category of travel.”

“It’s not the same as people booking an Airbnb and going away for the weekend,” he said. “They book Unyoked because they’re stressed, anxious, need a sense of freedom, or want to clear their head. And they connect with the fact that these natural places are what makes them feel [better].”

Unyoked’s target demographic is millennials. Think of the stereotype of the burnt-out young worker who needs a break and a bit of nature.

And in the next three to four years, the goal is to have around a thousand of these tiny houses in operation.

Similar to US-based Getaway – known for its tiny, Instagrammable matte black cabins – Unyoked’s properties are all accessible to city dwellers.

But according to Grant, Unyoked prioritizes isolation, unlike Getaway.

Some of its units are all on the same property.

But given the distance between cabins, travelers likely won’t see or hear other Unyoked guests during their stay.

The walls are clad with plywood walls, leaving the natural wood grain exposed.

And outside, each unit is equipped with a fire pit and cooking facilities for travelers who want a true camping experience.

To stay off the grid, all the tiny houses are equipped with solar energy, rainwater tanks, wooden fireplaces and compost toilets.
