Opening for Noose is not an easy task for any group.
There’s virtually no chance anyone at the show will be there for any reason other than the ‘Knot, no matter who’s on the lineup. So why not test the limits of what they’re going to do?
In 2005, Conan O’Brien invited Slipknot on the show for a television performance, promoting Volume 3. The two parties apparently really dug in, as the Conan O’Brien show involved them quite a bit with comedic nut-themed trio The Slipnutz.
Conan then plays a clip of what their performance entails. The three members come out (including comedian Jon Glaser), throw bags of peanuts on the floor, string nuts and proclaim their band name. It’s kind of a joke troupe, but it’s pretty hilarious.
Of course, going further, Conan thought it would be hilarious to put them on a bigger stage, namely opening Slipknot on tour. The clip then cuts to the three hanging out backstage at the Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. They talk about their band “history”, and their relationship with weirdos.
Later, they have a meeting with Slipknot themselves, thanking the group for the opportunity and saying they would warm up the crowd for them. Slipknot, silently wave to them.
Finally, the band take the stage, and after a quick announcement from the MC, enter their track. The audience is visibly confused at what they are saying. The trio, dressed in their vests and khakis, immediately sing their part, don nuts and get booed. Countless Slipknot fans are pointing at them as they start tossing the peanuts back to the crowd.
Some fans seem to understand that’s a bit, but there’s a lot of genuine anger watching a joke band play. Awkward.
