Being a parent is anything but a walk in the park, but Heather Rae and Tarek El Moussa are thrilled with their first child.
HGTV Hosts confided in their newborn son, Tristan, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight published Thursday, with Rae gushing about the strong connection she feels with her baby boy.
“I didn’t think I’d be so obsessed with him. I thought, you know, ‘Oh, it’d be fine for dinner parties’ or ‘It’d be fine for short trips’ and it’s hard to even go to the doctor or leave the house at all,” Rae told ET. “Now we have this little thing that we have to protect for the rest of our lives, and it’s so precious.”
She added: “He’s such a good baby. I have this insane bond with him that I didn’t know I was going to have, and I don’t think you can experience that until he doesn’t. isn’t there and you have those feelings.”

El Moussa, who shares daughter Taylor, 12, and son Brayden, 7, with his ex-wife Christina Hackreflected on how his third cycle of fatherhood has been different.
“I’m older now, I’m more established (and) I’m a bit calmer,” El Moussa said. “I find that with Tristan I can be a lot more present, which means I don’t have a million things going through my head. So every night we have a one-on-one, and he lies down my chest for about an hour every night and that’s where we really bond.”
The couple, who wed in October 2021, welcomed baby Tristan into the world on January 31. announcing his birth in an Instagram post in early February. “Our little boy is here,” El Moussa wrote at the time. “Our hearts are so happy.”
Rae also shared how the arrival of their son changed her outlook on motherhood.
“Everyone always said I was a really caring person, and I really look after (Taylor) and Brayden,” Rae said. “So when I thought I didn’t want my own baby everyone was shocked and then, you know, we decided to do it and he’s here and now I realize what I was supposed to be.”
But adoring after a newborn also comes with its sacrifices, Rae explained, including less quality time as a couple.
“It’s been tough because we love spending time together, but we know the importance right now is Tristan and what he needs, and (Tarek) understands that too,” Rae said. “So we try in the evening when he’s got Tristan: we go to bed together, we put on a show, we cuddle up. But he’s busy.”
“He’s going back and forth, rushing. I’m on maternity leave right now, so I’m home,” Rae continued. “I have a lot of moments with Tristan, but our time will come back.”
