Everyone is familiar with the sound of a persistent car alarm. Usually when one of them goes off, people try their best to ignore the sound. One artist, however, used the distracting noise as inspiration for music. Toronto pianist Tony Anne created a composition aptly titled “My Neighbor’s Car Alarm”, which superimposes the piano over a loud horn in the distance.
This whimsical performance was recorded and uploaded to Youtube, where Ann plays her keyboard outdoors in front of nearby buildings. After the car horn blares a handful of times, we see Ann’s hands take off over the keyboard, flying in a transporting composition that completely changes the unwanted sound experience from earlier. It also adds several piano layers to enhance the depth of the piece.
Ann’s unique idea has even inspired other artists. Toronto-based musician Share Bhatti came across “My Neighbor’s Car Alarm” and decided to add his own contribution to the composition through his percussion instruments. In his versionhe plays his drums on the soft piano, merging three beats – the car alarm, Ann’s piano and her drums – into one incredible soundtrack.
