The play also counts among its directors and producers some of the best in the industry. Acclaimed screenwriter and playwright Daldry is directing with Justin Martin, and 21 Laps is producing alongside the prolific Sonia Friedman Productions and Netflix.
The first shadow is fixed in Stranger Things’ Hawkins’ home in 1959, about 25 years before the hit TV series. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister doesn’t take his radio show seriously, and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds a fresh start is not so easy and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.
Daldry reportedly spent a year working with masters of illusion to develop magic tricks and special effects for the play. He set up a series of workshops to help the creative team assess what the effects would look like in production.
“Collaborating with the brilliant Stephen Daldry has been nothing short of inspiring, and Kate Trefry has penned a piece that is both startling, chilling and heartfelt,” the Duffer Brothers said. “You’ll meet endearing new characters, as well as some very familiar ones, on a trip down memory lane that lays the groundwork for the future of stranger things.”
Friedman, whose credits include The Book of Mormon And Ghosts, said stranger things “allowed rich and fertile ground to create an incredible story for the scene.”
The Phoenix Theater has become the perfect venue for hit shows and A tram called Désir starring the Oscar nominee, Mescal moves there from the Almeida later this month. Landing stranger things is a major blow. The final season of the fantasy thriller is the most-watched English-language show of all time on Netflix and stranger things launched the careers of a number of budding young stars, while putting the Duffers on the map.
